NEW CURRICULUM FOR LOWER SECONDARY

EXTRACTS FROM NCDC CIRCULAR 1/2020 DATED 2ND JANUARY 2020

  • COMPULSORY SUBJECTS IN S.1 2020.

N.B: General Science will only be done by Special needs students
  • The school is required to choose only four (4) elective subjects from which the leaner picks/selects one to be added to the 11 compulsory subjects listed above.
  • Schools are requested to submit formal requests to the Director, NCDC for the instruction materials required to teach a maximum of four (4) elective subjects to be selected from the list of electives for Senior 1 and 2 below. On delivering the request letter, the school will accordingly be issued with the elective teaching syllabi of those identified subjects.
  • The electives for senior 1 and 2:

The choice for the elective subjects will be made from the following groupings:

N.B: Learners with special learning needs such as visual impairment and dyslexia will study general science as an alternative to the major science subjects.
  • Before selecting the electives, parents need to be well sensitized about the option to be taken on by the student.
  • Schools are advised to turn those subjects they have been teaching (especially practical ones) but have not been selected as electives into clubs where learners actively participate for purposes of skills development and a certificate of merit is awarded at the end of the course.
  • The format of assessment has been changed i.e BOT, MOT or end of year have been removed and replaced with topical exercises/activities from which the average mark is generated and this can be used to make the report for the learners.
  • A detailed circular is to be issued to schools by UNEB pertaining to students’ assessment.

At S.3 in 2022, the curriculum menu will change as follows:

Electives for senior 3 & 4.

The choices for the two elective subjects OR three elective subjects for learners with special learning needs will be made from at least two of the following groupings:

Further guidance:

  • All secondary schools shall be obliged to offer the 11 compulsory subjects for Senior 1 & 2 as indicated above in (a).
  • School instruction time is from 8:00 a.m to 2:55 p.m but the School day will run up to 4:30 pm each working day.
  • Each lesson is 40 minutes which will total to 40 periods per week.

Proposals at UMSSN:

  • The school needs to select the 4 elective subjects to be taught in S.1 2020.
  • S.1 time-table needs to be re-designed /re-aligned as per the needs of the new curriculum.

Old Curriculum (S3 and S4)

This covers the current Senior three and Senior four classes (2022)

Physical Education is taught in all schools but is not examined by UNEB at the end of cycle.

 At the end of Senior four the students are subjected to National examinations, Uganda Certificate Education (UCE) that promotes them to A’ Level. 

A’ Level constitutes two classes that is Senior five (S.5) and Senior six (S.6). 

Advanced Level (A’ Level)

A’ Level constitutes two classes that is Senior five (S.5) and Senior six (S.6).

At Uganda Martyrs SS Namugongo, a Senior Five student can either join the Arts Faculty or Science faculty.

FACULTY OF ARTS 

The cluster of subjects which are taught at the same time are as follows:

Fine Art/Luganda/Literature/French/Entrepreneurship Education.  Therefore, a student must select only one subject from this cluster.

FACULTY OF SCIENCE

Faculty of Sciences is divided into two sections that is Biological Science and Physical Science.

Biological Science Section:

All students admitted for Biological Sciences offer Biology and Chemistry.

Students pursuing Biological Sciences can only select Foods and Nutrition i.e. they must not select Fine Art, French Luganda, Literature in English nor Entrepreneurship from the cluster of elective subjects.

 Combination in Biological Sciences with Principal Mathematics.

Physical Science Section

All students admitted in this section pursue principal Mathematics and Subsidiary Computer studies.

Students can not pursue both Physics and Geography.

Students can not select Luganda, Literature in English nor Foods and Nutrition from the cluster shown below:

Fine Art/Luganda/Literature in English/French/Entrepreneurship/FN.
